Scope and Content Ferguslie Mills, Paisley, Renfrewshire (Renfrewshire council area) Ferguslie Mills were founded in 1826 by James Coats as a cotton thread works. It became one of the largest thread mills in the world, and the firm of J and P Coats dominated the world sewing-thread industry for many years. This is a view looking across the fifth floor of number one spinning mill, with ring-spinning frames on the left. Note the great width of this enormous mill. By 1984 the works was being run down to closure. The site has since been almost completely cleared, and developed for housing. Plans to adapt number one spinning mill into flats proved abortive.
