Scope and Content Ferguslie Mills, Paisley, Renfrewshire (Renfrewshire council area) Ferguslie Mills were founded in 1826 by James Coats as a cotton thread works. It became one of the largest thread mills in the world, and the firm of J and P Coats dominated the world sewing-thread industry for many years. This view shows the central boiler-house for the works, built to supply steam to the works power station,(which supplanted individual steam engines), to the dyeworks, and for heating. Its scale shows how large the complex was. By 1984 the works was being run down to closure. The site has since been almost completely cleared, and developed for housing. The gatehouses are virtually all that is left of this vast complex. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
