Scope and Content North British Railway viaduct, Stirling (Stirling council area) This viaduct replaced a structure built for the opening of the Stirling and Dunfermline Railway in 1852. It paralled a cast-iron viaduct built for the Scottish Central Railway in 1848. The Stirling and Dunfermline became part of the North British Railway. This view shows the viaduct, which spans the river Forth, from the south east. The three spans consist of malleable-iron trusses of the lattice, or Town, type, supported on masonry piers and abutments. Note that the railway is on top of the trusses. This type of construction was also used in the Oykel Viaduct on the Sutherland Railway, opened in 1868, and by the North British Railway in the Stobcross Branch, opened in 1874. This viaduct probably dates from the early 1870s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
