Scope and Content Dumbarton and Inverleven distilleries, Dumbarton (West Dunbartonshire council area) These distilleries were founded in 1938 by Hiram Walker and Sons (Scotland) Ltd, the Scottish subsidiary of Hiram Walker-Gooderham and Worts, of Canada. Dumbarton is a grain whisky, and Inverleven (with Lomond) was a lowland malt whisky distillery. This view shows disc filters in Dumbarton, used to separate sold, mainly grain husks, from the 'pot ale' left after the alcohol had been removed from the wash. The continuous still at Dumbarton took in the whole mash, hence the husks in the pot ale. The filtered pot ale was concentrated in an evaporating plant, producing a thick syrup which was then blended with the dried husks from the filters to make 'dark grains', sold as an animal feed supplement.
