Gravestone commemorating Janet Kedzlie, Morebattle churchyard, Scottish Borders This gravestone commemorates Janet Kedzlie, the wife of a local tenant farmer, who died in 1729 aged 63. Finely executed, this relief carving on the back of Janet's gravestone depicts the Angel of Death, her wings spread as if in flight. To further emphasise her identity she clutches a skull and bone, emblems of death. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
