Description Rothes, Glen Grant Distillery, Interior View showing old stillhouse

Date 27/3/1980

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 570178

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Glen Grant Distillery, Rothes, Morayshire This distillery was founded in 1840 by John and James Grant, from Aberlour Distillery. It remained independent until 1953 when it amalgamated with the Glenlivet distillery, and is now part of the Seagram empire, which was for sale at the end of 2000. This view shows the interior of the old stillhouse, which was still coal-fired in 1980. The stillman is seen here looking into the firegrate of tone of the stills. This was fed with small coal by an 'underfeed' mechanical stoker. This type of coal-fired installation was popular about 1960, but few examples survived in 1980, as many had been replaced by steam heating, which was cleaner and more efficient. This stillhouse was demolished in the 1980s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
