Scope and Content Detail of plaster corbel in staircase hall in west wing of Barr House, Argyll and Bute Barr House was originally a rectangular two-storeyed block dating to the third quarter of the 18th century and typical of a small laird's house of this period. In 1815 a west wing was added and in 1844 the house was extended with a court of offices. It is thought James Gillespie Graham (1777-1855) was responsible for the design of the west wing. A Scottish architect who became well-known for his designs of irregular, or asymmetrical, Gothic houses in Scotland, he was talented at devising interiors. The ceiling of the staircase hall is decorated with plaster rib vaults which spring from ornamental plaster corbels such as this one in the form of the head of a smiling man. Graham used carved timber, stone and plaster to re-create medieval details. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
