Scope and Content Prestonfield House and Stables, Priestfield Road, Duddingston, Edinburgh, from Arthur's Seat Prestonfield House, now a hotel, stands on the south side of Duddingston Loch. It was designed in the 1680s by Sir William Bruce for Sir James Dick, Lord Provost of Edinburgh, to replace an earlier house burnt down by a student demonstration in 1681. The house, surrounded by parkland beneath the slopes of Arthur's Seat, has a two-storeyed round stable block, by James Gillespie Graham in 1816, to the north. Externally squared off at all corners, the inner court is laid out in a perfect circle. James Dick, a wealthy merchant, bought the Prestonfield estate in 1677 when he was created a baronet of Nova Scotia. His family, later to become the Dick-Cunynghams, have continued in uninterrupted possession of the estate until the present time. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
