Scope and Content Detail of newel-post in Inveraray Court House, Inveraray, Argyll and Bute The court house in Inveraray was designed by Robert Reid (1774-1856), architect and surveyor to the King in Scotland. His plans were adapted by James Gillespie Graham (1766-1855) and the court house was erected between 1816 and 1820. The ground-floor layout consists of a symmetrical arrangement of rooms and corridors grouped around this central scale-and-platt staircase. Scale-and-platt staircases comprise two or more flights at right angles with a half- or quarter-landing. The newel post, which is the principal post at the end of a flight of stairs, appears to be made from cast iron and has a decorative base of curved brackets. It supports the timber handrail.
