Scope and Content View of south archway and courtyard at Kilmory Castle from the east, Argyll and Bute In 1816, Kilmory Castle, which had 18th-century origins, consisted of a rectangular house with a central wing. This was incorporated into a Tudor Gothic mansion built for Sir John Powlett Orde between 1828 and 1836, which was again extended in 1860-78. These Tudor-style additions to Kilmory Castle were built between 1860 and 1878, when Sir John died. The three blocks are built of cherry-cocked rubble, which means small stones are set in the vertical joints between the blocks. All the blocks have oriels, or bay windows in the upper floors. The archway entrance to the courtyard is reflected in the archway entrance to the block opposite. There is also an archway to the right which has been infilled at a later date.
