Scope and Content Detail of tiled floor in former vestibule of Kilmory Castle, Argyll and Bute In 1816, Kilmory Castle, which had 18th-century origins, consisted of a rectangular house with a central wing. This was incorporated into a Tudor Gothic mansion built for Sir John Powlett Orde between 1828 and 1836, which was again extended in 1860-78. Despite many internal changes which have taken place there are still some internal features dating to the time of Sir John Orde, including this floor in the former entrance-hall which dates to 1837. The floor is made of Minton tiles of Moorish design. In the 1830s glazed and decorated earthenware, or encaustic, tiles became very popular. They were often used to decorate halls and public spaces in houses. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
