Description Inverneill House, Walled Garden. Detail of stair to South-East angle-tower in walled garden.

Date 1987

Catalogue Number A 45676

Category Photographs and Off-line Digital Images

Copies SC 558863

Scope and Content Detail of stair leading to first floor of angle pavilion in walled garden of Inverneill House, Argyll and Bute A large, now uncultivated, walled garden, dating to 1790, lies to the east of Inverneill House. It has rubble walls coped with slabs. The symmetrical east frontage of the garden has two angle pavilions. The two-storeyed south pavilion also has a basement. The first floor of the south angle pavilion is reached by an external forestair, which is supported by a Doric column. To the right, there is a gate pier capped with a small urn. The original Inverneill House was probably built between 1801 and 1805 for Sir James Campbell. Most of it was demolished in 1955. The existing three-storeyed tower was probably built in the late 19th century as the north wing of the original house. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
