Date 21/9/1979

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 556470

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Cockenzie Electricity Generating Station, Cockenzie, East Lothian This large coal-fired power station was built for the South of Scotland Electricity Board, to replace a number of small first-generation generating stations. The engineers were Kennedy and Donkin and Strain and Robertson. This view shows the station from the south east, with its glazed boiler, turbine and auxiliary halls, and two reinforced-concrete chimneys. The architects, who worked with the engineers on the structure, were Robert Matthew, Johnston-Marshall and Partners. The result is a complex of great simplicity and dignity.
