Scope and Content Thistle Brewery, Alloa, Clackmannanshire This brewery was founded in 1830 by James Maclay, and rebuilt in the late 19tth century. Though one of the smaller Alloa breweries, it survived to become the last in operation. This view shows the office block, in front of the tall red and white brick brewhouse, the entrance to which can be seen in the centre of the building. On the right is part of the maltings, disused by 1979. Maclays survived the elimination of all but a handful of Scottish breweries between the 1950s and the 1970s, but closed in 2000, leaving the Caledonian Brewery, Edinburgh, and Belhaven Brewery, Dunbar as the last traditional breweries in Scotland.
