Scope and Content Biscuit bakery, United Co-operative Baking Society, McNeil Street, Glasgow This was the last major building project undertaken by the United Co-operative Baking Society. It was constructed to cater for the increased demand for biscuits in the 1920s. Up to that time biscuits had been baked within the Society's main bakery. This view shows the bakery from the south west, looking across the cleared site of the Society's main bakery, demolished in 1977. Note the classical treatment of the sandstone and terra-cotta brick façade. This building was demolished soon after this photograph was taken. The decline in retail co-operation from c1960s effectively killed co-operative wholesale manufacturing, which had been very important in Glasgow. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
