Scope and Content Gravestone of William Calder, Torphichen churchyard, West Lothian This gravestone commemorates William Calder, a farmer at Woodsyde, who died aged 70 in 1769. Also buried here are his wife Margaret and his two children. Flanking the inscribed tablet are a pair of flowers, possibly poppies, symbolising eternal sleep. The pair of heads probably represent William and his wife. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
