Description Motherwell, Dalzell Steel Works, Interior View showing light section mill

Date 1978

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 549232

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Dalzell Steelworks, Motherwell, Lanarkshire This works was founded by David Colville and Son in 1880 to complement their malleable iron works of 1871. It became part of Colvilles Ltd in 1930. That concern added after World War II a new light section rolling mill. This view shows the primary reduction mill in the light section mill. The bevel gears on the left drove the roller table which moved the steel billets into position for passing between the rollers. The table is seen here partly dismantled. The works closed in 1978 as part of the British Steel Corporation's policy of phasing out uneconomic plants. In this case, the demand for light sections had fallen substantially since the 1950s.
