Scope and Content View of still house and chimney from south-east, Glendronach Distillery, Aberdeenshire Glendronach Distillery was founded in 1826 by a consortium called the Glendronach Distillery Company. After a serious fire in 1837 the site was restored by Mr Walter Scott who had learned the trade at Teanininch Distillery. Glendronach was bought by Captain Charles Grant in 1920, sold to William Teacher's & Sons in 1960, was mothballed in 1996 and re-opened in c.2002. This shows the modern still house and chimney which were added c.1960. The flat-roofed building is constructed from grey and red stone and has large windows divided vertically to allow the stills within to be viewed from outside. A walkway at first-floor level links it to the older rubble buildings (right). Many distilleries have modernised their facilities over the years, and now display a mixture of practical, modern structures alongside the mellow stonework and pagoda vents of the original buildings. Most maintain their malt kilns even though they are rarely used, as they give the distillery an authentic appearance. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
