Scope and Content Detail of portico, Colinton House (now Merchiston Castle School), Colinton Road, Colinton, Edinburgh Colinton House is a large villa which was built 1801-6 for Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo, who bought the Colinton estate in 1800. It stands in parkland to the north of Colinton village, and was adapted as part of Merchiston Castle School in 1930. This elegant central entrance portico is supported by twin Ionic columns. The double doors are flanked by long narrow sidelights with a wide segmental fanlight above. Sir William Forbes bought the Colinton estate from the Foulis family, whose ancestors had owned the land since the 16th century. He helped to plan the building of a new house and the layout of the park, but died in 1806 before it was fully completed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
