Scope and Content Cottages in Spylaw Street, Colinton, Edinburgh, from the south Spylaw Street, known simply as the 'main road' until 1913, was the village street of old Colinton. It runs down the steep hill to the bridge over the Water of Leith, and the parish church on the other side of the river. This long row of early 19th-century cottages, with pantiled roofs and neat south-facing back gardens, was known as 'The Row'. They were remodelled c.1900 when each had a little brick 'privy' (lavatory) built on to the rear wall. The pantiled houses in The Row were funded as almshouses from an endowment trust set up by James Gillespie (1725-97), a tobacco merchant in Edinburgh, who had a snuff mill on the river. He left his considerable fortune for 'the care of old men and women'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
