Scope and Content The New Cramond Bridge (Cramond Brig), Cramond, Edinburgh The 'New' Cramond Bridge, which carries the main road from Edinburgh to the Forth Road Bridge and the north, spans the River Almond a mile or so from Cramond village. It was built in 1824 to replace the 'Old' Cramond Bridge, a short distance downstream. The elegant three-arched stone bridge, built by John Rennie, was originally designed to carry the turnpike road to Queensferry. Later it was widened out of all recognition in order to cope with the traffic flow between Edinburgh and the north. In 1824 when the 'new' bridge was built over the river, Cramond was within easy reach of the fastest turnpike road in the country. The Aberdeen coach could do the ten-mile stage from Edinburgh to Queensferry in 50 minutes with no change of horses. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
