Scope and Content Dunrobin Place, The Colonies, Glenogle Road, Stockbridge, Edinburgh The Colonies, a small development of eleven parallel terraces, was planned in 1861 beside the Water of Leith on the north side of Glenogle Road by the Edinburgh Co-operative Building Company in an attempt to provide artisan housing at a modest cost. Dunrobin Place consists of 'flatted cottages', one cottage on the ground floor, and one above. The upper cottage is entered by the outside stairs on this side of the terrace, and the ground floor from the other side. The houses were intended to provide low-priced housing for working people to be able to buy or rent. The Colonies proved an immediate success, and similar schemes were later carried out in other parts of Edinburgh. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
