Scope and Content South entrance to the old Stockbridge Market, St Stephen Place, off St Stephen Street, Stockbridge, Edinburgh Stockbridge Market, designed c.1825 by Archibald Scott on the model of the Liverpool Market, included stalls selling meat, poultry, fish and vegetables in the manner of a country town. It was never a great success and closed in 1906. This grand entrance to the market has Greek Doric pillars on either side of the archway, above which is a carved cornice. The sign-writing below advertises the products of the market, and pre-dates 1906. The iron bracket was intended to hold a gas lamp. In the early 19th century, people relied on markets in the Old Town for local produce. The market below North Bridge supplied meat, and fish from the River Forth; the Tron Kirk vegetable market sold potatoes and carrots that were evidently 'excellent'.
