Scope and Content Ruined Parish Church and Chapel, Kirkapol, Tiree, Argyll & Bute The roofless ruins of an old parish church and chapel, dating possibly from the latter half of the 14th century, stand at Kirkapol on the east coast of Tiree, looking across the fine sweep of sand of Traigh Mhor to Gott Bay. The buildings were photographed by the Victorian photographer, Erskine Beveridge c.1898. The church (left) is a gabled rubble ruin, built to a skewed rectangular plan, and with a small burial ground, enclosed by rubble walls, on its south side. The chapel (right), on a small rocky knoll to the north, is oblong in plan, with its gables and north side wall still standing to their original heights. Kirkapol was one of two medieval parishes into which the island was divided. The parish church first comes on record in 1375, and was dedicated to St Columba. It is not known when the site was abandoned as a place of worship, but the church may have continued in use into the 18th century. The chapel has no recorded history, and the dedication is unknown.
