Scope and Content Dalzell Steel Works, Motherwell, Lanarkshire Dalzell Steel Works was developed by David Colville and Son from 1880 to complement their existing malleable-iron works. A new large open hearth steel plant was installed in the 1914-18 War. After 1945 a new light-section mill was built by Colvilles Ltd. This view shows a circular saw used to cut steel bars to finished length, after they had been reduced to their designed section. This saw cut the bars while they were still hot, and relatively soft. It was installed during World War II. The bar mill was closed as part of a scheme of rationalisation by the British Steel Corporation. It was a relic of the First World War, when it had been installed to make material for shell manufacture, as had Mossend. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
