Scope and Content Hydraulic crane, Albert Dock, Leith Harbour, Edinburgh This crane was part of the original equipment of the Albert Dock, designed by Rendel and Robertson as a fourth wet dock for the port of Leith, and the first dock in Scotland to be equipped with hydraulic machinery. This view shows the crane from the south west, with the dock to the right. The wooden tower to the left housed the controls for the crane. Hoisting was accomplished by a hydraulic ram behind the jib, operating through a series of pulleys. The crane could also be turned round - slewed - by a second hydraulic ram under the surface of the quay. The crane was kept when the others were removed, and has been scheduled as an Ancient Monument. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
