Scope and Content Wemyss Bay Station and Pier, Renfrewshire This station was built by the Caledonian Railway to replace the train-shed constructed in the 1860s by the Wemyss Bay Railway. Like its predecessor it was designed for interchange between railway and steamer services. This view shows the exterior of the station from the south east. The arched entrance to the right leads to the semicircular concourse, and the pier is beyond the tower on the left. The English Arts and Crafts style was very fashionable at the time. The station was designed by Donald Mathieson, the Caledonian's Chief Engineer, and by James Miller, architect. The interior featured smooth curves to encourage rapid transfer of passengers and luggage between train and steamer. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
