Alness Point, Storehouse View from ESE showing SE front

SC 509037

Description Alness Point, Storehouse View from ESE showing SE front

Date 23/8/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 509037

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Former granary, Alness Point, Ross and Cromarty Alness Point projects into the deeper waters of the Cromarty Firth, and must have been a shipping point of some consequence. The presence of an ice house indicates that there was a salmon-fishing station, and there was a large granary. This view shows the four-storey granary from the north west. Note the massive buttresses, added when the walls showed signs of weakness. The windows on this side are horizontal rectangles; on the other side they are vertical slits. The date and purpose of this granary are unclear. It may have been a rent-house, used to store rents paid by tenants in corn, but it is so different from known rent houses that it is more likely that it was a merchant venture.
