Scope and Content Lake of Menteith The area of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park contains a rich variety of archaeological sites and historic landscapes, which continue to have a major impact on the environment today. The Lake of Menteith is rich in archaeological monuments, including Inchmahome Priory, a castle on Inch Talla, and four prehistoric crannogs. In the foreground there are fragments of Flanders Moss in which another crannog has been found. Crannogs are artificial islands, mostly built between 500BC and 1000AD. The waterlogged conditions on these sites, submerged beneath lochs or in peat bogs such as Flanders Moss, can preserve organic artefacts which would not survive elsewhere.
