Description Skullomie, Harbour Distant view from SSE showing jetty

Date 29/5/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 498601

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Scullomie Harbour, Sutherland, Highland This remarkable harbour is formed by a long angled rubble quay on the inner side of a rocky peninsula. The neck of land joining the quay to the mainland has a ramped slipway on the side facing the harbour, possibly intended as a stilling beach. This view shows the harbour from the south west, with the angled quayin the middle distance. Note the three sets of inset stairs. This harbour appears to have been designed as a base for herring curing, and was probably built as part of the Sutherland Estate's programme of estate improvement. It was apparently little used because of its difficult approach from the sea. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
