Scope and Content Interior of Thistle Chapel, St Giles' Cathedral, High Street, Edinburgh The Thistle Chapel, added to St Giles in 1911 by Robert Lorimer, is the private chapel for the Order of the Thistle. It is the most ornate building of its type built in Scotland since the Middle Ages. The elaborately carved Knights' stalls by William and Alexander Clow, are built round three sides of the Chapel. They bear the arms of past and present members of the Order. The stained glass window of St Andrew is by Douglas Strachan. The Order of the Thistle, Scotland's oldest and most senior Order of Chivalry, was founded in the 15th century by James III. The Order has 16 Knights and three Royal Members. Knighthoods are given to distinguished Scots for services to the nation. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
