Scope and Content Old Church, Temple, Midlothian Following the fall of Jerusalem to the Crusaders, the Knights Templar came into being to protect pilgrims from Saracen attack in the Holy Land. Knights swore vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience, living under a monastic rule akin to the Cistercians. All that survives of the Preceptory at Temple is the 13th-century church. Like many religious houses, the chapel survived the Reformation serving as the local kirk until 1832. In time the Templars became powerful, owning many rich estates and fortresses. Under allegations of corruption, the Templars were suppressed by the Pope, culminating in 1314 with the Grand Master being burnt at the stake in Paris. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
