Scope and Content National Gallery of Scotland, The Mound, Edinburgh The National Gallery, designed by William Playfair for the Board of Manufactures, opened in 1859. The majority of paintings and sculptures in its distinguished collection are English and European works ranging from the 16th century to the present day. The gallery is cross-shaped with Ionic porticos on each side of the higher central transverse section. The pilasters along each side are completely plain, there are almost no windows, and there is virtually no ornamentation on the building. The interior of the building consists of two parallel galleries running north and south. Each is divided into five octagonal rooms, now restored to their mid-Victorian bright red colour scheme. The central room on each side is particularly large. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
