Scope and Content Late 19th century view of Princes Street, Edinburgh, looking westwards Princes Street, the southern street of James Craig's New Town, was built as a long row of plain terraced houses on the north side, with their own pleasure gardens on the south side, and splendid views over to the Castle and the Old Town. By the 1890s, many of the original Georgian houses had been replaced by Victorian department stores as the street became a fashionable shopping centre. The few buildings on the south side included the Scott Monument and the Royal Scottish Academy. By 1786 building in Princes Street had proceeded as far as Hanover Street, and in 1805 all the feus had been taken up. Commerce invaded from the start and by the 1830s Victorian reconstruction had transformed the Georgian street. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
