Scope and Content Nos 108-110 George Street, Edinburgh George Street was originally two opposite rows of plain-fronted houses. As the grand central thoroughfare of James Craig's New Town, it was made wider than its sister streets, Princes Street and Queen Street. This tenement dates from the early 1790s. The doorpiece of the main door ground-floor and basement flat has Corinthian pilasters, and lampholders in front with torch extinguishers The first and second-floor flat had its entrance by a stair at No 108. As the New Town expanded westwards, the double tenement flat became an increasingly popular type of accommodation. It consisted of a main door ground-floor and basement flat, and a two-storey flat above whose front door was reached by a common stair. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
