Scope and Content Waterloo Place looking towards Calton Hill and the Monuments, Edinburgh This view shows a busy scene at the eastern end of Princes Street where it opens into Waterloo Place. Calton Hill lies at the far end of Waterloo Place and as the names suggest there was much building here in the early 19th century. Nelson's Monument was completed in 1816 and designed as an upturned telescope. It was originally topped by the apparatus for a time signal, visible from the sea, to enable local shipping to set their chronometers. The National Monument was intended as a memorial of the Napoleonic Wars and designed to be a replica of the Parthenon. It was designed as a church, but money for the project ran out after the construction of only twelve columns. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
