Scope and Content Oakfield Bridge, Crinan Canal, Lochgilphead, Argyll The Crinan Canal was built as a ship canal between 1794 and 1809, to designs by John Rennie. This hand-operated swing bridge was built by P and W MacLellan of Glasgow. This view shows the bridge from the south east. The light wrought-iron span is pivoted on the far side of the canal, and is swung by turning a windlass at that end. The Crinan was built to avoid the voyage round the Mull of Kintyre, a dangerous one in the days of sail. It is now used mainly by yachts. The wharf at Oakfield Bridge was used by vessels trading with Lochgilphead. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
