Scope and Content Detail of a gravestone commemorating Jain Laidlaw, Lasswade Churchyard, Midlothian This gravestone commemorates Jain Laidlaw, the wife of a local wright, who died in 1739, aged 49. These figures probably represent the Three Fates. On the left is Clotho, drawing out the thread of life from her distaff. On the right is Lachesis, spinning the thread and determining its length. In the centre, ready to cut the thread of life, is Atropos. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
