Scope and Content Edinburgh Castle from the Grassmarket Edinburgh Castle rises above the Grassmarket, once one of Edinburgh's busiest markets. The Castle Rock owes its origin to volcanic action many millennia ago. To the right is the semicircular structure of the Half-Moon Battery, built in the 1570s. To the left, the Great Hall and Palace, built in the 15th and 17th centuries. Weekly sales took place in the Grassmarket until 1911, but it was also a more sombre place, being the site of the public gallows till 1784. Today, though it has been much redeveloped, many of these buildings may still be made out. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
