Scope and Content Edinburgh Castle, Foog's Gate Foog's Gate was built in the reign of Charles II, in the late 17th century, to allow access through the internal perimeter wall of Edinburgh Castle. At this time there were considerable alterations to improve the defences of the Castle. The late 17th century was a time of general religious unrest with threats to the Crown from the Covenanters, a group who opposed the settlements made after the Restoration. In this light the fortifications of the Castle were particularly important. The gate in the photo lies on the site of the original Foog's Gate, which was more elaborate than its present form. Recent archaeological excavations uncovered evidence of an elaborate outwork for close fight which had originally been sited here. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
