Description New Lanark, Nos 1 and 2 Mills View from NE

Date 1/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 458857

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Numbers one and two mills, New Lanark, Lanarkshire These were the first two mills built at New Lanark, and were designed to use Arkwright's patented system of cotton spinning. They were water-powered from a lade running partly in tunnel from above Dundaff Linn, one of the Falls of Clyde. This view shows the mills from above, with number one mill, cut down c1945, to the right, and number two mill, widened in the 1880s, to the left. In 1976 the mills were owned by Metal Extractions Ltd, and the debris round the mills was theirs. In the early 1990s Number one mill was restored to its pre-1945 appearance, and has been converted into a training hotel, with some bedrooms in number two mill. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
