Scope and Content View of Salmon Draught Cottage from the east, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute This cottage, which is still occupied by estate fishermen, is situated on the north-west shore of Loch Shira, an inlet of Loch Fyne. Freshwater springs at the shore attract the salmon waiting to swim up the River Shira. The cottage does not appear on 18th-century estate maps and it is likely that it was built by Dugald McKellar in 1799. It is built into a bank above the shore and these two segmental-arched openings provide access to unvaulted cellars. The largest cellar was the fish-cellar, used for grading and inspecting the salmon. The other was used as a byre, but is now used as a henhouse.
