Scope and Content Drawing showing Old Inveraray Castle, Argyll and Bute The mouth of the River Aray had been the headquarters of the Argyll Campbells for centuries. In the 15th century they built a castle there, around which the town, Inveraray, grew up. Meaning 'mouth of the Aray', it became an important market for the area. This is the market-place of Old Inveraray. In the foreground is the mercat cross and to the right is the two-arched bridge built in the 1730s. To the left of the cross is Old Inveraray Castle, dominated by a high tower which was uninhabitable by 1744. To the right of the Castle are the Tolbooth and the steepled church. In 1744 Archibald, 3rd Duke of Argyll, returned from London to see the estate he had inherited and decided to have the castle rebuilt and the town moved half a mile to the south.
