Scope and Content Charlotte Square Garden, Edinburgh Albert Memorial Charlotte Square, designed by Robert Adam in 1791, is one of the most beautiful large residential squares in Europe. In 1803 a circular garden in the middle was levelled, laid out to a plan by William Weir in 1808. It was enlarged as an octagon in 1873. In the centre of the garden is the Albert Memorial, a large bronze equestrian statue of Prince Albert by Sir John Steell, on a huge block of Peterhead granite, almost 5m high. St George's Church is in the background. Queen Victoria, delighted by John Steell's work, knighted the sculptor at the unveiling of the statue in 1876. The statue cost the city £16,500.
