Scope and Content St George's Church, Charlotte Square, Edinburgh St George's Church, now West Register House, was built by Robert Reid, 1811-14, after Robert Adam's original design was rejected as being too costly. The church stands on the west side of the square, with a clear view along the length of George Street. The church stands as the centrepiece of the west side of the square. Its tall copper dome with a gold cross on the top is a notable feature of the Edinburgh skyline, and stands 50m above the ground. The building is no longer a church, having been converted to serve as an additional public record office, West Register House, in the 1960s. It is open to the public, and historical documents are on display. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
