Description Greenock, Westburn Refinery View of W end of S block ,from W

Date 3/9/1975

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 455020

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Westburn Sugar Refinery, 150 Lynedoch Street, Greenock, Renfrewshire This was the last sugar refinery to operate in Scotland. It was a large multi-period complex, incorporating 19th century fabric, but also including buildings rebuilt after damage in the Greenock Blitz of 1941, and some post-war structures. This view shows the west end of the refinery, with a block of late19th/early 20th century warehouses on the right, and the end of the 'traditional' refinery block, with its rooftop water tank, to the left. The Westburn Refinery belonged latterly to Tate & Lyle.. The refinery closed in 1998, as result of falling demand for refined sugar. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
