Scope and Content Infirmary suspension footbridge, Ness Walk, Inverness, Inverness-shire This is one of a pair of suspension footbridges built across the river Ness in 1881, using the then-new technique of having wire rope for the main suspension cables. This one was designed by CR Manners and built by W Smith & Sons, Ness Iron Works. This view shows the bridge from the north east, with its lattice-girder pylons supported on tapering cylindrical cast iron piers. The deck is a single-Warren truss, with light railings. This bridge was threatened with replacement in 1974, but survived to be overhauled in the early 199os, when the riveted deck was replaced by a welded one to the same profile.
