Scope and Content East Cluden Mills, Dumfriesshire This was one of the finest water mills in Scotland, powered by two low-breast paddle wheels, each about 1.2 by 4.9m. The mill building was converted into a house c1970, retaining come of the machinery. This view shows the wheels from the lade. Note the large-diameter axle of the nearer wheel, which would originally have been wooden. The size of this mill reflects the rich agriculture of the surrounding area.
