Scope and Content Isle of Whithorn Harbour, Wigtownshire This is the southernmost harbour in the Machars, and the harbour used by pilgrims to the shrine of St Ninian at Whithorn. The harbour is now much used by pleasure craft, and by small fishing boats. This view shows the quay of 1790 on the left, lined by warehouses. The pier to the right is of mass concrete construction, and probably of about 1900. One of the buildings on the 1790s quay is called the Steam Packet Inn, a relic of the pre-railway days in the Solway, when the steamship was the main means of communication for coastal parishes.
