Description Strautfield, Quartalehouse, Waulk Mill View from SSE

Date 15/8/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 446051

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Waulk Mill, Quartalehouse, near Old Deer, Aberdeenshire This was a water-powered waulk mill, powered by an internal all-iron water wheel, 0.91 by 4.57m, with water drawn from a large mill dam. It was used for finishing woollen cloth made at the nearby Mill of Aden, but the machinery had been removed by 1974. This view shows the main milling range on the left, with stores on the right. In a waulk mill cloth was beaten under water, with fullers earth, a kind of natural soap. This felted the surface of the cloth, making it solider and more windproof or warmer. The water wheel drove the wooden fulling stocks. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
